The Easter break has been well earned, and we wish you a safe and blessed time over this sacred period. Please remember to remain vigilant and continue to implement Covid protocols. We look forward to welcoming you all back on Wednesday 28th April.

HOLY WEEK
Holy Week is a very sacred time of the year, for it is when we commemorate and remember the last week of Jesus' life on this earth. These are the days leading up to the great Easter Feast. The Lenten season of sacrifice and self-denial is about to come to an end, and this coming week is extremely important for all Christians. The greatest focus of the week is the Passion (suffering) and Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the events that led up to it.
Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday, (on 28 March this year), which marks Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The central feature of the Palm Sunday Service is the procession with palms. The palms are blessed and the faithful enter the church carrying their palms in procession, after which Mass is celebrated. In the Palm Sunday Mass, the gospel of Christ’s Passion is read.
An important part of Holy Week, for Catholics, is the Easter Triduum. These are the three days just before we celebrate Christ’s Resurrection.
On Holy Thursday we re-enact the Lord’s Last Supper; a Passover meal that Jesus shared with His apostles on the night He was betrayed and arrested. At the Mass, the priest will wash the feet of twelve parishioners, just as Jesus did. On this day, priests all over the world renew their sacred vow, because at the Last Supper Jesus not only instituted the Eucharist but also the ministerial priesthood.
On Good Friday, the day of the crucifixion and death of our Lord, the faithful venerate the Cross. A service is normally held at three o’clock in the afternoon (the hour, it is believed, that Jesus died). We go forward to kiss the Cross to show honour, respect and gratitude for Christ’s sacrifice. There is no consecration of the Eucharist on this day, and the Communion we receive will be from the night before, which has been reserved in the tabernacle.
Holy Saturday is a day of keeping vigil. We keep watch for the expectant rising of Our Saviour. This was the day He went down into the netherworld in order to bring back up with Him into heaven those who had died before His coming. Up to this time, the gates to heaven were closed and no one could go there because of the original sin of Adam.
Holy Week is important as it reminds Christians of Christ’s self-giving in love; we can learn so much about Jesus in those last moments. It is also a time to look back at the Lenten season to see how we’ve grown in relationship with God through our own sacrifices, and to express gratitude for God’s many graces. Easter is a very important festival in the life of the church, it celebrates Jesus’ victory over death and the opening of Heaven with the gift of eternal life to everyone.

Wishing you all a blessed Holy Week and a joy-filled Easter.

INTERACT EASTER EGG COLLECTION - 2021

At the beginning of March, we were approached by the Teddy Bear Foundation to help collect marshmallow Easter eggs to make their children’s Easter celebration a little special. This is an organisation that takes care of abused children.
The Interact committee was given two weeks to collect the goal amount of 900 eggs and the school exceeded our expectations with a total of 1612 eggs. A big thank you to all the girls who contributed, especially to the Grade 8s who gave so generously. Unfortunately.

D. HONOURS
Mr Lydall
Over the last 3 weeks some of our swimmers have been incredibly busy competing in either the Virtual Midmar, Regionals, Open Water Nationals, South Africa Junior Nationals and South Africa Senior Nationals. The results are as follows:
VIRTUAL MIDMAR

- Cassidy Sinclair in a time of 21:24
- Kathryn Price in a time of 31:20
- Gina Gomes in a time of 34:44
- Rachel O’ Grady in a time of 23:08
- Isabella Cadman in a time of 31:01
- Natasha Snyders in a time of 37:00
- Cheleigh Watson in a time of 45:42
Although this year was a different atmosphere than the girls are used to, they still showed incredible determination as they had to complete the race in a normal swimming pool on their own. Swimming 64 lengths on your own without stopping not only takes time but it also shows the courage and bravery of these wonderful swimmers. Well done ladies on being an excellent example for us all.
LEVEL 2 REGIONALS – 12th-14th MARCH 2021

- Miksha Rawjee
- Ashlynne-Kate O’ Grady
- Gabriella Whitfield
LEVEL 3 REGIONALS – 19th-22nd MARCH 2021

- Rachel O’ Grady
- Emma Lauf
We would like to congratulate all the swimmers for their outstanding tenacity and dedication towards swimming. You ladies have certainly made Assumption Convent proud. A special mention goes to Emma Lauf who secured a bronze medal in the Woman 14-24 years category for 50m Breaststroke and Yasmin de Goede who competed in the Open Water Nationals and came 9th in the Woman category. We wish the following swimmers all the best for their up-and-coming prestigious competitions:
SOUTH AFRICAN JUNIOR NATIONALS – 26th-28th MARCH 2021

- Cassidy Sinclair
- Tatum Lauf
SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONALS – 16th-19th APRIL 2021

PRIMARY SCHOOL RELIGION
GOD SEES OVER THE HORIZON
The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a tiny, uninhabited island. He prayed fervently for God to save him. Every day he scanned the horizon for help, but there was nothing in sight. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of some pieces of driftwood which would protect him from the elements, and to store his few possessions. One day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky. Everything was lost and he was devastated. Stunned with grief and anger, he shook his fist at the heavens and demanded to know why God had done this to him. Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him. The exhausted man wanted to know how the ship captain knew where to find him in such a vast ocean. The reply was simple. His smoke signal had been spotted.
It is so easy to get discouraged when things are going badly in our lives. But we should not lose heart, because God is always at work in our lives, even when it seems that we are alone in our suffering, and even when we cannot see how he is working in our lives. We do not always know what lies over the horizon. For many of us, it could mean great change over the horizon, moving to a new neighbourhood, starting a new job or school, saying goodbyes and welcoming new opportunities. Pope Francis encourages us all to reflect on the farewells that we have to say in life. “It is good to think about this,” he remarked, “As life is filled with farewells.” Beau Taplin, an internationally acclaimed writer, put it perfectly when he said that the sunset is proof that endings can sometimes be beautiful too. Remember, next time that the little hut is burning to the ground; it just may be a smoke signal that summons the grace of God and opens up new horizons.
