ACS 75th ANNIVERSARY

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
It is hard to believe we are at the end of term 2. While, at times, the term has felt like a never ending struggle to the top of Mount Everest, we can all be very proud of the fact that we have faced all challenges, and handled the adversity successfully. We end the term on a high note with our Assumption Day celebration on Friday. Regrettably, due to level 3 restrictions we have had to curtail our celebration this year. We hope you will join our celebration on Friday, 6 August live at 09h00 on You tube https://youtu.be/6SZ8MSjpJJs We will also stream the event live on our Facebook page at 09h00. We wish our pupils and teachers a well-deserved rest during this Winter break. For those who are ill, or have loved ones who are ill, you are in our thoughts and we wish you a speedy and full recovery.
We look forward to welcoming you all back in Term 3.
Kind Regards
Neville Workman
Principal

HIGH SCHOOL RELIGION
The Solemnity of Our Lady Assumed into heaven is celebrated by the Church on the 15th of August, every year, our school celebrates Assumption Day on the last day of the second term. This is a big feast in the life of the Church, and also for our school which is specially dedicated to Our Lady.
Very simply explained, The Assumption of Our Lady, is when the Blessed Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was taken up, body and soul into heaven by God. This is a belief that has been held from the very early days of the Christian church; that Our Lady’s body was not allowed to decay.
The Blessed Virgin Mary is honoured through her Assumption, thus proving the words of her Magnificat, “He has looked upon his servant in her lowliness, and people forever will call me blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me.” (Luke 1:48-49)
It is not only Roman Catholics who believe in Our Lady’s Assumption, Christian of the Eastern Catholic Churches, Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy, and parts of the Anglican Communion and Continuing Anglicanism believe that the Blessed Virgin Mary was the bodily taken up into Heaven at the end of her life.
May Our Lady of the Assumption, pray for us.

Prayer for the Assumption of Mary
Father in heaven, all creation rightly gives you praise, for all life and all holiness come from you. In the plan of your wisdom, she who bore the Christ in her womb was raised body and soul in glory to be with him in heaven. May we follow her example in reflecting your holiness and join in her hymn of endless love and praise. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

INTER-HOUSE CHESS
Inter-house chess took place on Wednesday, 5th August.
We played two rounds of chess in the computer centre, using the lichess platform, but with pairings made according to seniority for the first round, followed by a strength vs strength pairing for the second round. Paulist emerged as the winners, with Rosaria the runners-up and Assumpta in third. Micaela Brandao and Jackie Musakwa each achieved two wins, while there where single wins for Haleigh Knipe, Daniela de Goede, Keziah Singh, Amy Jackson, Yasmin de Goede and Emma Lauf. It was also the last official duty of club captain Micaela Brandao whose tenure has come to an end. Micaela has been a positive and encouraging role model for the younger players, and we wish her well for her prelims.
Final standings:
1. Paulist 550 points
2. Rosaria 330 points
3. Assumpta 220 points

Jackie Musakwa studies a chess position on her way to two decisive victories.

ATHLETICS TRAINING CHALLANGE
Athletics training challenge: We call on all our sports girls and especially the athletes to run a 4km over the weekend. Use a reputable app on your phone or watch to record it and post it onto the athletics group. We recommend Strava or Nike Run Club. There are chocolate prizes for the fastest in each grade. Categories are; Fastest time for 4km, fastest 1km within the 4km and those who do 3 weekend runs in a row. Please observe Covid protocols and find a safe place to run. Unfortunately treadmills will not be counted. You need to find a safe road or trail.
An example is in Dunvegan at Peter Pan Park. Relatively safe and straight forward and family can relax in the park while the running happens. You can run at any time. I will be there between 8am and 10am. Hope to see you there.

PRIMARY SCHOOL RELIGION
MOTHER MARY
I recently read this beautiful article about Mother Mary which I would like to share, it is an uplifting story that shows us the joy of humanity and the love of our Lord. It is called, “Mother Mary in the Subway,” written by Rodney Leung, American journalist.
Life is a gift from God which brings us miracles every day. One of these everyday miracles happened to me. I was working at Salt +Light Media, and someone had donated some used religious items to us-statues, crosses, works of art, prayer cards etc. Management decided to give them out to the staff. For me this was a real blessing, an end-of-year bonus. I was so excited and quickly made my choice, my eye was immediately caught by a statue of Mary made from resin.
Since I was taking public transport, it made sense as the statue was light to carry. It was of our Lady of Fatima. I looked for a bag I could put it in to keep it safe on the subway, and the only one I could find was a large, transparent packet, so Our Lady was on full display as I travelled home. It was rush hour, and there were so many passengers it was impossible for me to find a seat. So, I held the statue in my arms, feeling weary. And that’s when the miracle happened.
A middle-aged lady approached me, she looked very kind but very tired. She started talking to me and she asked, “Is that Mother Mary?” I replied with a smile,” Yes, it is.” Then she reached out and touched the statue, with tears in her eyes.
“I couldn’t have imagined I would see Mother Mary in the subway. I feel so tired after work, and I have so many problems to deal with. I travel a long way home every day. I feel so blessed to see Mother Mary, it has given me such a relief from all my stress.”
The subway stopped at the last station, and we walked out together, two strangers who had connected though the love of our Lord. We decided to pray together. We thanked the Lord for giving us a new day and a beautiful moment on the subway. We offered our joy, anger, sorrow, and stress to the Lord, and we asked Mother Mary to pray for us. At the end, we prayed a Hail Mary together.
This time her eyes filled with tears of happiness. Then we said goodbye, and she went to take another bus home. To me, this was a miracle. Whatever she was going through, this lady experienced healing from God through our encounter. I was blessed to be God’s instrument to pass this healing moment on to her. We never know what God’s plan is, but HIS plan is always good. Miracles are happening every day, and you can be the one to bring miracles to others. As Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta often shared, “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.”

On August 15th, we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. This holy day marks the occasion of the Virgin Mary’s ascent to heaven at the end of her life. The Church’s official doctrine of the Assumption says that at the end of her life, Mary was assumed, body and soul, into heaven to be with her son. Even though Mother Mary was assumed into Heaven, she is always with us. Mary loves us and wants us to be with her and her Son in Heaven for all eternity. The story above is just a simple, yet beautiful way of explaining how we can be brought closer to God through the love our Mother Mary in Heaven has for us, and that every day miracles do happen around us, bringing us hope in difficult times. In danger, in doubts, in anguish and in joy, think of Mary and ask her to pray for you and your families.

As we celebrate the Assumption here at our school, we also remember those in our school community and family who are no longer with us. Our thoughts and prayers are offered to those who are experiencing loss and painful memories.
Our Prayer
Holy Mary, mother fair,
Filled with love for God,
Pray for us in all our needs.
Pray for us today. Amen
